New York Community Bank is proud to support Pets for Vets, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides pets for military veterans who may benefit from the therapeutic merits of a companion animal following their tour of duty. Founded by animal trainer, Clarissa Black, the Pets for Vets program is dedicated to supporting our American veterans while providing a second chance for shelter pets. NYCB recently presented the organization with a generous donation in support of organization’s continued efforts to assist servicemen and servicewomen returning from active military duty.
Following their tour of duty, an estimated 20 percent of our military veterans suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or traumatic brain injury (TBI), conditions that can lead to other life-threatening risks if not properly treated. The need for emotional healing often extends beyond the support provided by government and veterans organizations.
Meanwhile, in animal shelters across the country, millions of dogs and cats are euthanized each year. Many of these animals have the potential of becoming ideal companions with the proper training. Pets for Vets evaluates and rescues these shelter pets and provides additional training to help them become the ideal companion.
The success of the program can be attributed to the organization’s ability to make the perfect veteran/pet match based on the individual’s needs, personality, and lifestyle. Both the veterans and animals have been through traumatic events and together with this life saving therapy they can help heal each other.
Pets for Vets currently has chapters in 23 states (including those served by the NYCB Family of Banks) and Washington DC.
